Press Play...Play Nice.

1.) “Dueces (remix)” - Chris Brown
(ft. Drake, T.I., Kanye West, Fabolous, Rick Ross and Andre 3000)
We’ve all heard the original by now, but this remix hits. Hard. Every verse is dope, and I can’t even pick a favorite, because all the featured artists go IN.

2.) "Christian Dior Denim Flow" - Kanye West
(ft. Kid CuDi, Pusha T, John Legend, Lloyd Banks and Ryan Leslie)
Yeezy seems to be doing no wrong, lately. This is, yet another, dope record. If you can’t get enough, check out “Lost In the World”, ft. Bon Iver, too. Hotness.

3.) “10 Seconds” - Jazmine Sullivan
Ok. So, Ms. Sullivan digs down deep into her soul with this record. She tells it just like it needs to be told. I feel it. I respect it. I love it.

4.) “Haterade” - Gucci Mane (ft. Nicki Minaj and Pharell)
This track is featured on Gucci’s newly released album, The Appeal – Georgia’s Most Wanted. Pharell and Nicki add just the right touch to an, otherwise, potentially typical Gucci record. With a smooth beat and some biting lyrics, it’s the perfect balance of sweet and sour.

5.) “With You” –Lil Wayne (ft. Drake)
This record gets my vote for hottest track off Weezy’s most recent album, I Am Not A Human Being (released last week. Cop it, if you haven’t). Lyrics are nothing short of genius, per the usual from Mr. Carter. Listen close!

6.) “Let’s Get It In” - Lloyd (ft. 50 Cent)
There have been mixed reviews about this Lloyd/50 collabo, but the vibe is dope, and I can appreciate the fact that it’s not your standard “baby maker”. You be the judge, though.

7.) “Waiter/The 5 Senses” - Jeremih
Speaking of “baby makers”, this one’s a little more typical. Slightly reminiscent of Raheem Devaughn’s 2008 hit single, “Customer”, this track has the ability to take your mind all kinds of places. I’d say it’s a real good look for Jeremih though, who just released his second album, All About You, last week. Take a listen. You won’t be disappointed.

8.) “Hell Of A Night” - Dorrough

This man may not be a lyrical genius, but he DOES know how to get you noddin’ your head and movin’ your feet. Another classic Dorrough jam, right here.

9.) “Right Through Me” - Nicki Minaj
Ms. Harajuku Barbie’s debut album, Pink Friday (dropping 11.23.10), is one of the years most highly anticipated solo discs, so it’s no surprise that each of her records has to reach a certain level of dope. Nicki peeps into the minds of many females and delivers an all-too-familiar message on this one. Penetrating lyrics and a beat you gotta force out of your brain? I’d say it’s the perfect recipe for another Young Money hit.

Worth the Mention:
“Already” - Pleasure P
“Good Girls” - Juelz Santana (ft. Jay Bezel)
“5 Senses (remix)” - Jeremih ft. 50 Cent

Happy Downloading!

Strictly Truth ... Oh You Fancy Huh? Pt. II.

*Chan.Lo. Note: 'Oh You Fancy Huh?' created such an interesting discussion that I thought it best to ask our own Kenny Masenda to give a male POV on the topic. Be enlightened.

Peace. Love. Truth.

Recently, I read Elena’s piece “Oh, You Fancy, Huh?” and was given the task of coming up with a response to her words. Honestly, I’ve read her post countless times, all with the intention of coming up with the most carefully-crafted response to her question that was initially posed to the masses, which was:

So, why is it that these powerful men still settle for the video vixens, strippers and DE-pendant women in their industry and throughout? What makes our ambition any less desirable in real life, as opposed to when it is embedded in the hook of a chart-topping single?

At one time, in times when I honestly thought I knew more than what I actually did, a response could have been crafted that could spark a firestorm, an uprising, or anything else that would have constituted excitement, enthusiasm, or maybe even just messy. These days, life has slowed things down for me, and with that, when I read this question, the same answer came back to me over and over again: these “powerful” men in question are more than willing to look for convenience rather than the women they praise in song and verse. Allow me to elaborate.

While I do this, keep in mind this is merely my opinion, and one that certainly will not resonate within all men, or even a majority of men. These “powerful” men realize what it takes to have a woman who they hold in high esteem, and while I don’t question the sincerity in their words, it does serve as a head-scratcher when certain women see these same men with women who are the opposite of what they sing, rap, and harmonize about. At the same time, this is something that any independent woman, in my opinion, really shouldn’t worry about too much. Your ambition is just as desirable in real life as in song, and, if anything, “powerful” men know they can’t just walk up on you, flash some money, their car, or any other tangible object, and expect you to bite.

They know in order to get you, they have to come with their A-game. They have to be attentive, show interest, be creative, be consistent, and work. When you see a “powerful” man out and about with a woman who is the opposite, it’s usually at some social event (awards shows, sports events, etc), and they would rather be seen with a female they don’t have to work hard to get, but looks the part, as opposed to the female they have to work their butt off for, but STILL looks the part. It’s not a knock on independent women at all, and, if anything, it saves you plenty of heartache, headache, angry Facebook messages, scorned tweets, rants, and anything else that’s counter-productive to your well-being.

There may be a fear from women who “have their own” being the same ones “who sleep alone,” but they are also the same ones who are held, at least in my eyes and others who feel similar, as the epitome of a woman, a queen, and someone who is more than ideal for a man to settle down with, once a man decides to settle down for good. That’s why as long as a woman continues to handle her business, she shouldn’t be concerned about what any man has to say about her, or when “powerful” men are choosing M&Ms over an Everlasting Gobstopper. When you see these cats out on the red carpet with a female who chose a different grind to the top, smile at them, and continue to do you, and realize that your path is a path that’s unique, and void of any man’s assistance except God’s.

Press Play ... Let It Ride.

Ms. E. is back with more dope for your ears. A great friend of mine is helping me bring the music to you in a better way, Chan-Lo.com will be packed full of goodies. However, for now peep the playlist, download the tracks, and transport to a happy place.

Keep Groovin'.
Peace. Love. Music.
XoXo
Chan.Lo.
1) "The Trip" and "The Extra Trip" - Wale
For an artist of his caliber, Wale is incredibly underrated. Both songs (which come on the hinge of his latest mixtape, More About Nothing) are so lyrically intrinsic that I had to listen close just to understand. Wonderful music.
2) "Devil In A New Dress" - Kanye West
Kanye crazy beat. Check. Yeezy spittin fire. Check. Dope is what they call this. Peep game.
3) "The Usual" - Trey Songz feat. Drake
The terrible twosome is back at it again on this, yet another leak, from Songz's upcoming album due to be released September 14th. The duo combine for a playful piece in which Songz addresses the public opinion regarding his sexually provocative lyrics. His reponse is laced with classic Trey-isms. As far as I'm concerned, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
4) "Villematic" - J. Cole
I introduced Mr. Cole previously and my opinion has yet to waiver. This track is on heavy rotation and his words commandeer the beat. Very hard to accomplish. Done well by this young man.
5) "Only Girl (In the World)" - Rihanna
The first single off of RiRi's upcoming followup to Rated R, entitled Lost. This track is reminiscent of her previous hit, "Please Don't Stop The Music", in the fact that it exudes more of a techno/Euro dance vibe. Get your glow sticks ready. Aside from the track itself, Rihanna seems to be broadening her vocal range with this release. Certainly a different sound. Check it out.
6) "All I Want Is You (Remix)" - Miguel feat. Rick Ross and J. Cole
This record happens to be one of my favorites at the moment. Ricky Rozay give the track a bit more edge yet, the overall value remains the same. Check out both the original as well as the revamped remix and choose your favorite.
7) "Hard Times" - John Legend feat. The Roots
John Legend is back with the feel good music we are used to hearing from him. The combo with the legendary Roots gives this track a message for the masses. Be encouraged.
8) "I Think It's Over" and "Amazing You" - Ne-Yo
The King of the Pen is back with two tracks that convey polar opposite messages. The contrast was quite refreshing however, Ne-Yo has done it before. Would love to see something a bit more off the mark from him. Nonetheless, songs are good, classic Ne-Yo.
9) "Everyday Struggle" - Faith Evans feat. Raekwon
Music with a message is making a comeback and this is no different. Faith Evans lends her super star voice to this inspirational track. It's definietly a make you think piece.
10) "Check It Out" - Will. I. Am. feat. Nicki Minaj
Want to hear Nicki steal the show on someone else's record...again? Download the latest from the B.E.P. front man and see him slightly upstaged...In a good way.
11) "Take Me Away" - Jermaine Dupri feat. Johnta Austin
Great twist on the 80's track "Sailing" which has also been remade by the likes of N'SYNC and Avant. Wonderful cover.
12) "Follow Me (Like Twitter)" - Kevin McCall feat. Chris Brown
As first featured on Breezy's mixtape, In My Zone, this song seems to be resurfacing as a Kevin McCall joint. Has been one of my favorites so, I opted to put it on the list for your listening pleasure. Peep Chris's entire mixtape while you're at it.
Worth A Listen:
"Black and Yellow" - Wiz Khalifa
"Keep It 100" - Tank
"Pledge Allegiance to the Swag" - T.I. feat. Rick Ross
"Scratchy" - Trey Songz feat. Swizz Beatz
"Do You Get It?" - Kid Cudi
"Fireworks" - R. Kelly
Happy Downloading!

Press Play - Artists You Know. Music You Don't.

Hello, again, my fellow music lovers! Check out my second playlist installment, full of the latest and greatest from today’s hottest artists. Enjoy! J

1) “Monster” Kanye West feat. Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj & Rick Ross

Dope. The beat is a Yeezy best. Intricate. New. Uncharted. Love it. However, I hate to say it, but Kanye was upstaged on his own record. Ms. Minaj does the damn thing! Take a listen.

2) “Wake Up Everybody” - John Legend feat. The Roots and Melanie Fiona

I love this, because the lyrical message conveyed through this record is so much more inspiring then any beat could ever be. Listen close. Be the change.

3) “You Just Need Me” - Trey Songz

Trey demonstrates versatility with this track, which is yet another leak off his forthcoming Passion, Pain, & Pleasure album (9/14/10). He incorporates some Euro energy into this record, but still keeps his traditional style throughout. If you’re like me and you can’t get enough of Mr. Songz, check out “Doorbell” and “Alone”, as well.

4) “Love ‘Em All” - Usher

Every record on Usher’s newly released Versus album is bomb, but this is one that gets my highest recommendation. Do yourself a favor and peep the whole disc.

5) “You Be Killin’ Em” - Fabolous

Fabo did his thaaanggg! Rhymes are there. Beat is there. Two thumbs up.

7) “Bottomz Up (Remix)” - Trey Songz feat. Gucci Mane & Wiz Khalifa

Different beat from it’s original, but I like the feel of this record. Gucci and Wiz give it a little extra twist of testosterone.

8) “Loving You No More” - Dirty Money feat. Drake

Drizzy’s verse goes extra hard, but the whole track is good look for Diddy and his Dirty Money crew. Dawn really shines with her vocals. Check it out.

*Chan.Lo. Note: Seems like Diddy is getting more play on the record however, the chorus and his verses are incredibly catchy. This may be another breakthrough single for the DM peeps.

9) “Make a Movie” - Twista feat. Chris Brown

They don’t call him “Mista Tongue Twista” for nothing. The man delivers on this record, in a big way. I am a fan of the Breezy collabo, as well. I feel a new record coming on…

10) “I’m Ready for You” - Drake

This track is just a demo. Beat is dope, though. Whoever picks it up will have a hit on their hands. Certainly worth the early listen.

11) “Movie Night” - Jesse Idol

Jesse is an up-and-coming artist, but this track is too smooth not to mention. Be on the look out for this young man. Bright future ahead!

Worth The Mention:

"Mama" - Lyfe Jennings feat. Anthony Hamilton

"What Up" - Pimp C feat. Drake and Bun B

Happy downloading!!

Until next time,

Strictly Truth ... Oh You Fancy Huh?

*Chan.Lo Note: Hello all! I hope Labor Day was splendid. Mixtape Monday will be back with a dope edition next week, however I know plenty of you have commented on the Strictly Truth topics we introduced. I appreciate all the feedback! This week, Elena P. takes a crack at a topic that has been on the minds of many. Take a read and speak the truth.

Peace. Love. Truth.
XoXo
Chan.Lo.

Drake refers to us as "Fancy", Wale as "Ambitious" and Ne-Yo as "Independent". Regardless of your lyrical preference, women who aspire to be appreciated for more than just their figures are being praised and encouraged throughout more musical media. So, why is it that these powerful men still settle for the video vixens, strippers and DE-pendant women in their industry and throughout? What makes our ambition any less desirable in real life, as opposed to when it is embedded in the hook of a chart-topping single? Allow me to explain my rationale.

It is easy to SAY that a financially successful man would rather date a woman with a degree, steady income, and a closet full of clothes purchased with her very own Visa. How often does this occur though? The artists we listen to want us to believe the hype but, lets be honest. Jay-Z and Beyonce are pretty much the only noticeable "power couple" and they seem to be the last of a dying breed. Watching the MTV/BET Awards is often like a game of "spot the video chick" who brought this model or that video girl as their evening arm candy. Not to hate on these women, do your thing, but, really? One trend I've noticed is that these women, as beautiful as they are, do not hold a candle to the men they accompany with regard to the power spectrum. Ironic? I don't think so.

Truth is, a man of such status prefers to "trophy" a woman with lesser power then himself. Women who contribute to the power equation don't require a man to complete them. A man to compliment is preferred over a man to supplement. The "independent woman" mind frame serves as a threat to many men who find their solutions in their bank accounts. Enitan "Bereolaesque" Bereola II said, "A rich man is used to owning things...that includes you!" Women who rely on a "sponsor" to pay bills and fill shoe racks are more likely to put up with infidelity and physical/mental abuse just to support their lifestyle. That is what makes the gold-digger so interesting to me. Why would one want to jeopardize the very essence of who we are as women (caretakers, helpers, gentle lovers) just to walk around with the latest Louis V. handbag on their wrists?

Ultimately a man's choice also boils down to convenience. We all know the saying "why buy the cow, when you can get the milk for free" lends quite a bit of validity to the overall argument. Typically, a woman who is looking for more than a few Gucci purses wants a little thing called, commitment. We want a family. We want love, not lust wrapped in a pretty package. For the powerful, controlling man, this type of relationship isn't convenient. Hit it and quit it is no longer applicable with the women mentioned above and ultimately, who wants to buy the cow?

Put yourself in the typical musician/producer/high profile artists shoes. You are a hip-hop phenom, traveling the country 360 days out of the year. Every night, there are swarms of women at your hotel, tour bus, dressing room, etc. Cloud 9 never felt so good and a little attention from exotic women doesn't seem like a bad idea. After all, they're basically undressing themselves, and you'll never have to see them again so, why the *bleep* not? Giving in is more and more prevalent and well, if he needs a date, at least he knows she's down for whatever after the show. One thing we all can agree on, regardless of occupation, is that temptation can be a woman's most effective weapon and a man's greatest excuse. Moreover, a woman with beauty and ambition farther than her body is a perfect combination but, is she convenient? Is she practical? On his dope record, yes. In real life, not so much.

The reality (not always, but all too often) is this: Women who handle their business, without the aid of a pole or retouched bikini photo, are the same women who sleep alone. And for those women who model, act, strip, whatever with the sole intent on supporting themselves and making sure they get their money as best they can, this isn't for you because you probably don't use men as a stepping stone to stardom. But, for the women who use their assets to live a lifestyle they cannot provide themselves, the invisible handcuffs that your too blinded by bling to see, will always remain, courtesy of the man who "loves" you.

EMP - Press Play

Hello music lovers of the world! Check out my first playlist! I've got a little something for everyone!

1) "Love Faces" - Trey Songz

"Love Faces" is the second single (following "Bottoms Up") off of Songz's upcoming Passion, Pain and Pleasure LP dropping 09/14/2010. Mr. Songz slows it down and gets back to much of his signature style on this record. Find yourself a pretty lady or a handsome man, press play, and have you a good ole time!

2) "What If I Kissed You" - Drake

This track is a nice switch for Drizzy, who seems to be leaning more on his R&B prowess these days. I'm a fan of the new new. You may be as well.

3) "Power (Remix)" Kanye West feat. Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz

There isn't much to say about this one. The title speaks volumes. Download. Now.

4) "Speechless" Ciara

Production by The Dream on this joint rides smooth (no pun intended). Ci Ci brings hot lyrics as well. Spread the love.

5) "Holding You Down (Remix)" Jazmine Sullivan feat. Wale

J. Sullivan AND Wale!?! Enough said. Carrying on...

6) "First Time" Pleasure P

This is Marcus Cooper's first leaked song (seems like you get no play unless you got a leak...) off his For Your Pleasure, Vol. 1 mixtape. It definitely has a distinct summer-time feel, old school...well...not so old school Pretty Ricky vibe.

7) "Breaking Point" Keri Hilson

Produced by Timabaland, this is the first single off of her forthcoming release, No Boys Allowed. Track is dope and poinent. Reminiscent of a female version of "When A Woman's Fed Up" by Kells. Ms. Keri Babbbbbbyyyy definitely delivers.

8) "Go To Sleep" Lupe Fiasco

Track is on point. Hot lyrics. Dope beat. All there. Enjoy.

9) "Air of The Night" Karina Pasian

Karina won me over with the single "First Love", off of her debut disc. I feel a hit with this one. Beautiful. Check this girl out. One to watch.

10) "Blow Up" J. Cole

If you're working/in school and have dreams bigger than four walls can confine, do yourself a favor and make this an anthem. Check out more motivation from Mr. Cole: "It Won't Be Long" and "No Holding Me Back."

11) "Back In Style" Joss Stone

Baby Aretha's vocals are on point, as always. Bringing "in love" back in style. This track will make your insides tingle.

12) "I Ain't In Love" Fabolous

Sold flow. Two thumbs up.

13) "Gone Already" Faith Evans

She's baaaaaccckkkk! I've always been a Faith fan so, it's exciting to hear new material.

14) "Stroke Your Ego" Usher

Ursher baby. Ha. Song is produced by Danja and reported to be a single on the upcoming Versus LP. Definitely a different sound but, give it a couple of listens.

Just In Case You Haven't Heard...Extra Ear Dope:

"See Me Now" Kanye West feat. Beyonce and Charlie Wilson

"Right Above It" Drake feat. Lil Wayne

"Mojo So Dope" Kid Cudi

"Commander" Kelly Rowland

"Hot Toddy" Usher feat. Jay-Z and Ester Dean

Happy Downloading!
